What are Allergies?

Allergies are non-infectious disorders. In fact, allergies are over reactions of our immune system. When the body perceives an external particle as a foreign element, our immune system acts to neutralize the invader; but sometimes, the immune system may overreact and that may cause suffering of allergy. E.g. of invaders can be dust, mites, mould, insect bites, pollen, perfume, cosmetics, food etc. Allergies cause inflammation of the respiratory system and they react by trying to expel the foreign matter most commonly through sneezing or coughing.

How Risky Are Allergies?

Respiratory allergies affect one in three Indians. Though irritants in the air may be the same, not everyone reacts similarly. When an allergen enters the body, the body produces an excess amount histamine to expel the allergen. However excess histamine is what sets off the chain of allergic reactions.

Allergies disrupt daily lives of an individual suffering and therefore quick detection, and treatment is extremely crucial. A serious allergy attack can cause instant death.

How Are Allergies Caused?

One of the reasons for allergies is hereditary. However, hypersensitivities or allergic reactions can develop in anyone. This is called “sensitisation.”

How Are Allergies Treated?

Allergies are treated using antihistamine medicines, decongestants etc. There are many advertised medicines for mild to moderate cases (which people purchase on their own). In severe cases, Doctors prescribe appropriate medicine based on the patient’s conditions. However, it is always advisable, to get treated by a Doctor instead of self-experimenting with medicines. In today’s modern era, many nutritional supplements have emerged as good supportive medicine to control long term allergic problems.
