Managing lipid-level in blood… a better and safer way!

The good news is that such treatment goals are very much achievable! To achieve the same, one must go beyond just diet control and exercise and score on all treatment goals! There are nutraceutical compounds which have demonstrated considerable specific benefits in this health-issue! Curcumin (the principal curcuminoid) extracted from Turmeric, has been studied to be an extremely effective agent to manage inflammation of arteries in atherosclerosis. It has been found to have multiple qualities such as antioxidant, anti-cancer and most importantly, anti-inflammatory and hypolipidemic qualities. Curcumin has been widely studied for its lipid- lowering effects, largely due to the anti-inflammatory and hypolipidemic properties. These properties make Curcumin an ideal supplement for high-lipid problems due to high LDL and high TG. Designed studies were conducted to evaluate its efficacy in treating hyperlipidaemia and were found to be very effective in reducing the target lipids.

One must remember, in the world of medicine/drug, statins are regarded as the ‘standard of care’ for the treatment of hyperlipidaemia. It is important to point out that patients suffering from hyperlipidaemia, do not show any symptoms of the disorder per se. It is diagnosed only when blood checks are done at path-labs. On diagnosis, doctors recommend one of the suitable statins to patients to reduce lipid levels in the blood.

A clinical review was published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology in 2016 elaborating comparative benefit of stain alone vs. statin with curcumin in lipidemic individuals.
