WHAT IS ISD? (ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE)

It is a condition in which a part of the heart muscle does not receive enough blood to sustain its operation. It happens due to narrowing by atherosclerosis (inflammation, fat calcium deposition etc.) of the arteries supplying the blood to the heart. Thus, it is also a described as Coronary Arterial Diseases or CAD.

Once the arteries get narrowed, the heart does not receive the excess supply on demand in situations like excitement or exertion and as a result, it causes discomfort or chest pain (angina); that sometimes finally leads to a heart attack (MI or Myocardial Infarction) and even death.

How Common Is This?

It is known as the world's biggest killer. Since 2000, the death rate has increased worldwide from 2 million to 8.9 million in 2019 which is 16% of the total death due to this disease.¹

Useful Nutraceutical Supplementation

Dietary curcumin is effective at inhibiting maladaptive cardiac repair and preserving cardiac function after ischemia and reperfusion. Curcumin has potential as a treatment for patients who have had a heart attack.³

CoQ10 has a potential role for prevention and treatment of heart ailments by improving cellular bioenergetics. In addition, it has an antioxidant, a free radical scavenging and a vasodilator effect which may be helpful in these conditions. It inhibits LDL oxidation and thus the progression of atherosclerosis. It decreases proinflammatory cytokines and decreases blood viscosity which is helpful in patients of heart failure and coronary artery disease. It also improves ischemia and reperfusion injury of coronary revascularization.⁴

Vitamins, garlic, lycopene, and tomato have already been shown to be able to reduce the blood pressure and prevent or delay cardiovascular diseases; however, further studies are needed to confirm their effects, especially with respect to supplementation in humans⁵

How Risky Is This?

As per the European Heart Journal, 'About one-quarter of IHD are fatal, although the proportion is dependent on disease definitions and age. About 60% of all IHD deaths occur out of hospital, and of these 60% are in people not previously hospitalized for IHD.²"
